notes on an angmoh leaving this small island
neil humphreys, the briton who writes for the today newspaper and has written 3 books, came by to sci this afternoon to give a talk and promote his book. i'm really glad to have seen him in person before he leaves for aussieland.
i still remember when i heard of him for the first time. that was when i was browsing through a bit of his first book in bugis kino sometime in 2003, where i would sometimes hang out after doing physio for my knee before my ns enlistment. he's really as funny in person as when he writes. not to mention he really knows how to appeal to the singaporean sense of humour. i think he's incredibly grounded in his values and opinions, despite the fact that he considers himself a global citizen. well i didn't buy his book or get an autograph though. but i have always been interested in stuff like seeing singapore through a foreigner's perspective so i'll have to grab his books sometime.
he also spoke about the (surprise, surprise) virtues of singaporean journalism outweighing the cons. haha. i might just have to reconsider majoring in journalism..even though i just got a D for my cs203 news article.
